The study recommends that the government should educate public on the danger of substance use/abuse in order to discourage users from the act thereby reducing violent crimes in the State. The State government should establish a counselling unit across the State where trained criminologists would give substance users orientation and advice on how to discourage them from using substances.Item Factors Influencing the Emergence of Community Involvement in Crime Control in Kuje Area Council of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria(International Journal of Migration, Security, and Peace Studies (IJMSPS), 2025-02-02) Ogye Danlami Okolo; Ugwu-Amadieze Martins OnyeanwaThe study examined the factors that led to emergence of community involvement in crime control in Kuje Area Council of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The widespread of crime in modern society have called for serious concern to all citizens and becomes a worrisome issue in Nigeria. Many communities in Nigeria have experienced different types of crimes in recent years. The increase in crime rates and the inability of the Nigeria police and other security agencies to deal with the situation effectively have given rise to community involvement as a supplement to traditional policing. The study utilized broken window theory to explain the problem. The study employed survey research design using cluster sampling technique to select 111 respondents from the total population of Kuje Area Council. The data collected through questionnaires were subjected to descriptive statistics which were presented in tables showing frequency and percentage responses of the respondents. In-depth interview conducted was analyzed using content analysis of narration. Based on the findings, the study underlined key factors that led to the emergence of community involvement in crime control is primarily due to a combination of factors including public distrust of the police, their perceived inability to effectively control crime, the rise in crime rates, particularly kidnapping, terrorism, robbery, and drug trafficking, which further highlighted the need for community involvement. The study recommends that the police in the Kuje Area Council of FCT, Abuja should involve community members as a strategy to control crime since they are not sufficient to fight the growing rate of crime in the community. That event is the thrust for this study as we believe that this newly realized understanding of the power of restrictive Internet policies could be a conduit for other technologically enhanced political and corrupt bureaucratic and, questionable practices such as the use of big data spying tools, digitally inclined electoral manipulation, and mass surveillance tools. As a result, we argue that the Twitter ban could be the beginning of digital authoritarianism in Nigeria. We explore the impending dangers of a dictatorial digital toolkit such as social media data mining and computational politics in social engineering with examples to buttress from patterns of foreign regimes.Item Public debt and economic growth in the West African monetary zone (WAMZ)(Elsevier, 2024-02-02) Dinci Jessica Penzin; Benedict Akanegbu NIn this paper, we revisit the relationship between public debt and economic growth with a spotlight on the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ). In the re-examination, we pursue three undertakings using both panel data and time series modelling techniques. First, we examine the linear relationship using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model for time-series data and the fixed (or random) effect model for the panel data counterpart. Second, we assess the nonlinear relationship by incorporating the squared term of the debt variable as an additional explanatory variable in the models. Third, we identify the level of public debt/GDP ratio beyond which public debt becomes unsustainable using threshold regression techniques. The findings show a negative relationship across the linear models. We also establish that the debt-economic growth relationship is non-linear, and we obtain the points of inflection for the WAMZ countries. These levels are 71.9 % for Gambia, 55.8 % for Ghana, 91.5 % for Guinea, 83.7 % for Liberia, 38.45 % for Nigeria and 38.6 % for Sierra Leone. We make suggestions for the WAMZ countries to expand their economic bases by channelling funds to infrastructure development and the development of human capital in order to optimize the benefits of debt accumulation in the long run.Item An analysis of the major factors of hate speech in the Nigerian digital environment(Journal of Communication and Media Research,, 2024-02-02) Suemo Shagbaor Jacob; Abdullateef Muhammed; Ahmad Murtada BusairRelying on the existing literature and empirical works, this study takes explorative perspective to identifying social media platforms that mostly propagate hate speech in Nigeria and some of the factors responsible for its spread. Anchored on the assumptions of the technological determinism theory and based on secondary data in the literature, this study found Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter as the mostly used digital channels for hate speech among Nigerians. It was also found that explosion of hate speech on social media were factored by political interests and freedom of speech as well as ethnic and religious sentiments. it is therefore suggested that the menace of hate speech on social media can be mitigated if the Nigerian government could come up with anti-hate laws and proactive counter-statements policy through the instrumentation of Nigerian Communication Commission and the National Orientation Agency.Item Influence of Ideological Themes in Social Media Political Campaigns on Voters' Education and Participation in Nigeria's 2023 General Elections(Journal of Basic and Applied Research International, 2023-02-02) Suemo Shagbaor Jacob; Ternenge Kusugh; Beatrice OkonkwoThis study adopted mixed research methods to investigate how ideological themes in social media political campaigns have influenced voters’ education and participation in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections. Through questionnaire and interview research instruments, the study found that in the last 2023 General Elections, Facebook was more often used for political campaigns in Nigeria compared to Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, google+, Facebook, WhatsApp and Blogs. These social media platforms, as the findings demonstrated, were more accessible to the voters thus, have easily became tools for political campaigns and were used to a great extent for that purpose. Unfortunately, as finding indicated, the ideological themes dominant in these platforms (social media) were to a great extent, negative as they were dominated by insults, abuse of opponents, hate speeches, falsehood, blame shifting, ethnocentric and religious undertones, anxiety and apathy among others, thereby, to a great extent, contributing to apathy among majority of voters in participating in the elections. Posting, commenting and sharing were the various ways through which those ideological campaign messages were spread to voters during the period of the last elections. The study concluded that social media has come to stay as platforms for use among stakeholders during political campaigns but its influence is abused by negative ideological construction which to a great extent, affects voters’ education and turn up in elections in Nigeria.
