Challenges to the Implementation of Open Source Integrated Library Management Software in Academic Libraries: A Case ofLibrary Management Software in Academic Libraries
(Library Philosophy and Practice, 2020-02-02) Olatunji Sunday Olabisi; Binta L. Farouq; Mustapha Idris
The paper examines the challenges in the implementation of Open source library management software in academic libraries in Nigeria using the experience of Kano University of Science and Technology, Library. The case study provides an account of the level of implementation of the NewGenLib library management software, which the library has adopted in the operations of the library, the challenges to the effective implementation of the software in the library as well as the strategies for the effective implementation of the software in the library. Qualitative data was gathered from structured interviews with the University Librarian as well as the heads of departments of the library. Findings reveal that the need for effective and adequate dissemination of information to the library users; the desire to ease the work of the library staff and the desire to allow users gain easy access to information material, pushed the library to adopt newer technologies in order to accommodate growing patron demands. Presently the software has only been implemented in the cataloguing and classification operations of the library. The challenges affecting the implementation of the software in the library include lack of funds, technical expertise, power failure and poor ICT infrastructure. Proper planning, prior feasibility studies, training of staff are recommended for any library planning to adopt and implement any ILMS successfully.

Adoption of Integrated Library Management Software(NewGenLib): The Experience of Kano University of Science and Technology Library, Wudil, Kano State
(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2018-11-23) Olatunji Sunday Olabisi; Farouq Binta L.; Idris Mustapha
Adoption of library automation software is imperative. In the changing phase of the information sector, Open Source Integrated Library System is gaining more significance across the world for various factors such as availability of source code, flexibility, cost benefit, better quality control, self-customization and community support. The main objective of this paper is to examine the experience of KUST Library in the adoption of NEWGEN Library Management Open Source Software (OSS). The methodology adopted was a survey design, data was collected using questionnaire. The questionnaires were administered to 5 staff of the library in the cataloguing units. The participants were limited to the cataloguing unit because it was observed that the software is presently in use in only the cataloguing unit of the library Findings show that the main reasons for the adoption of NewGenLib ILMS by KUST library were: provision of on-the-spot access to information, proper organization of information resources, accurate charging and discharging process, up to date statistical records, evaluation of information resources, linkage to all the faculty libraries for efficient management and adequate services to the users and resource sharing. ICT facilities available in the adoption of NewGenLib Software in KUST library include: server, computers, barcode printer, barcode label, camera, battery, computer printers, internet, barcode reader, UPS and photocopy machine. While scanning machine, inverter, projector are not available. The major challenges faced in the adoption of NewGenLib ILMS in KUST library are: erratic power supply, insufficient manpower, inadequate training and technical support, lack of participation, inability to modify some of the fields, accession number field not available on the interface where other fields are, scalability and speed, lack of supervision, lack of motivation. Based on the findings, the University management should create an avenue where all the staff will be actively involved in the adoption of the NewGenLib Integrated Library Management Software; they should also organize a workshop where the staff can be trained about the various modules of the software. The University library hopes to adopt the software to the services of other departments in the library after concluding the data entry process.

Integrating Wikipedia in the Information Service Space: The WikiAflib Experience
(IGI Global, 2022-01-01) Ngozi Perpetua Osuchukwu; Grace Temilolu Ikenna; Nelly Gospel Godwin; Adefunke Sarah Ebijuwa; Olatunji Sunday Olabisi
This chapter examined the input and output of WikiAfLibs training, the struggles, and lessons learned. The study used spidergram design of 5Ws and 1H (who, what, where, why, when, and how). Instruments used were online questionnaire and FGD. The participants were librarians in the #WikiAfLibs Cohort 1 drawn from Anglophone countries. It was discovered that live sessions, office hours, and learning resources were mostly favored among the activities (39% and 33%, respectively). Respondents used personal data subscriptions (75%) and received the training from their homes. Some have joined Wikipedia communities in their countries and have received funds. They struggled with cost of data subscription, fear of internet disruption, and not meeting the deadline of the assignments. They agreed that Wikipedia would give librarians more visibility, enrich services, and build partnerships. The findings imply that librarians' full embrace of Wikipedia will add value to information services. The study concluded that librarians should integrate Wikipedia in information service delivery.

Evaluation of the Adoption and Use of Integrated Library Management Software in Selected Private University Libraries in Management Software in Selected Private University Libraries in Osun State, Nigeria
(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2022-04-19) Olatunji Sunday Olabisi; Mutawakilu Adisa Tiamiyu
University libraries are expected to provide information resources and services to support the teaching and learning process of their institutions. For university libraries to deliver quality services, they are expected to continuously adapt to the changing institutional and global environments and requirements in use of current technologies to manage most or all library activities, particularly use of Integrated Library Systems (ILS). Furthermore, in the university libraries where ILS have been deployed, there is a need to carry out periodic evaluations of the systems. Hence, this study evaluated the adoption and use of integrated library software (ILS) in some selected private university libraries in Osun State, Nigeria. Descriptive and correlational survey research design was adopted. The population comprised undergraduates and library staff of Adeleke University, Fountain University and Redeemers University. Slovin’s formula was used to arrive at 384 as the target sample size of the undergraduates, while total enumeration was used for the sample size of the library staff since the population was small. Questionnaires were used for data collection. The data collected from the field were coded and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software. The findings revealed that majorities of the surveyed students were satisfied with the services provided through the ILS, except at the Adeleke University. Similarly, most of the students found the ILS easy to use and useful, the students except for the students of Adeleke University who were indifferent about the services, due to the fact that they were not using the services provided by ILS. This finding confirms that when selecting or upgrading software in libraries, the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use should be main considerations. Finally, the study identified erratic power supply, lack of enough user education on the use of ILS services, internet network issues, lack of technical know-how, lack of technical facilities, and lack of training and re-training of staff as the major challenges faced by students and staff when using the ILS. It was recommended that the management of Adeleke university library should improve on creating awareness among the library users for them to understand the importance of using the deployed ILS services. It was recommended that system deployment experts should be always consulted in order to configure deployed ILS modules to be user friendly.
